New frontiers: Blue Biotech or marine biotechnology
Blue biotech, a recently defined sector, is dealing with biotechnology methods applied to marine and aquatic environments. It therefore concerns the use of marine resources in order to improve knowledge regarding both production and ecologicy, enhancing food production derivatives and their safety. It brings forth new solutions for the control of the proliferation of aquatic organisms harmful to man and to the environment. It searches for new molecules with pharmaceutical potential.
The new frontiers of blue biotech include:
- The use of algae and/or derivative products to produce new drugs
- The use of genes of aquatic organisms to engineer plants resistant to particular environmental conditions
- The use of algae for the production of fine chemicals or biofuels (third generation biodiesel)
